French (MFL)

Intent
St John's School understands that learning a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. We believe our languages curriculum allows pupils to experience a variety of cultures and helps to foster pupils' curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We introduce the learning of the French language and understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We embed the essential skills of LISTENING, READING, SPEAKING and WRITING. We aim to build the children's 'cultural capital' so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures. In short, we hope to lay the foundations for future language learning.

Implementation
We teach French across Key Stage 2 and use the Language Angels scheme of work to support the teaching and learning. This provides clear progression for the development of speaking and listening, and vocabulary acquisition. It ensures development is progressive as they build on previous knowledge from units already studied. The Language Angels Progression Map shows how pupils learn French across each of the key skills of SPEAKING, LISTENING, READING, WRITING and GRAMMAR. Progress is assessed using informal and formal assessments which link to the DFE Languages Programme of Study. The subject leader monitors and evaluates learning. Lessons include lots of opportunities for children to contribute in French and their efforts are always positively rewarded. Activities include games, role play, action songs and rhymes, and readaing materials designed to help children learn French in a fun and engaging manner. We celebrate Bastille Day every July throughout the school. In EYFS and Key Stage 1, we promote an interest in French speaking countries and communities.

Impact
The impact of teaching French will be seen in the increased profile of French across the school. Pupils will be able to communicate with each other in French and will become aware that the structure of language differs from one language to another. Pupils will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of French culture and will transfer to secondary school well prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
