Outline of Curriculum
At St. John's, we have a single-age EYFS class - Hegdehog Class - and three mixed-aged classes: Owl Class (Year 1/2), Badger Class (Y3/4) and Fox Class (Y5/6). As a result, in KS1 and KS2, our curriculum is organised into a two-year rolling programme. We aim to provide opportunities for the children to learn and develop a breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills in a carefully-sequenced way. Children have the opportunities to revisit and build-upon knowledge and skills as they move into subsequent years, as can be seen in our curriculum progression documents. In KS1 and KS2, subjects are taught discretely.
Subject leaders are responsible for setting the content of learning in each subject, while class teachers can use their professional judgement to ensure that the sequence of learning, together with the tasks set, meet the needs of all in their class. Lessons are planned with clear and progressive learning intentions, success criteria and follow the knowledge, skills and vocabulary progressions created by subject leaders in line with the National Curriculum and EYFS framework.
Learning is adapted to include challenge for all and - where necessary - support, in particular for those who have Special Educational Needs. Outcomes of each day's learning are evaluated and planning is then modified as necessary to ensure that the needs of every individual are met.
We use a range of strategies to give our children opportunities to learn in ways that best suit them and the particular objective/intention being taught, for example, through direct instruction, investigation, research, problem solving or practical experiences. Whilst at times children need to work independently, learning can be a collaborative experience, so we encourage paired, group and whole class discussion and working.
For each class and each year of our rolling curriculum programme, we provide an overview which identifies units taught. These link to our curriculum documents, which show the development of knowledge, skills and vocabulary over time.
